Coach Steve Gordon took a rather unusual route to the Junior National coaching level. Before entering aquatics full-time, he played in an NCAA Final Four and the NBA. Once his basketball career ended, he surprised everyone by moving into aquatics instead of basketball.
Even as a college basketball player Coach Gordon was developing his aquatics roots, running a summer swim school and summer league team for the City of San Antonio. After basketball, he took his aquatics background to the Boys and Girls Club, where he developed one of the top inner-city programs in the country.
In 1994, he was recruited to Northside, to coach John Jay High Schools swimming and water polo teams, before becoming the Assistant Senior Coach in 1998. In his first time leading a Junior Championship delegation, Coach Gordon returned with a 6th Place Combined Championship banner from Bakersfield, California.
In addition to Coach Gordon’s Senior Team duties, he was the Safety Coordinator for NISD Aquatics, Swim America Swim School Director and Head Swimming and Water Polo Coach for Health Careers High School.
In 2009 Coach Gordon took his Health Careers High School girls and boys swimmers and water polo team to State where he was voted by his peers 2008-2009 Texas High School Coach of the Year. (In Swimming and Water Polo)
In 2010 Coach Gordon retired from Northside ISD after 27 years as an Educator/Coach.
Coach Gordon is really excited to have the opportunity to work at Shalom Austin and looks forward to being a part of the JCC team and family.
Hello! My name is Stephanie Brown and I am currently a college student studying biology. I have been a swimmer for the last 10 years . I competed in high school and my main events were the 200 IM and 100 butterfly. I have been coaching the Piranhas for a year now and it had been a very fulfilling job . I love being a coach and hope it always stays a part of my life no matter what path I take.
This is my third summer working at the JCC as a lifeguard and swim instructor, but my first summer as a Piranhas coach and I couldn't be more excited! I am a college athlete that has been loving competitive swimming since the age of 5, and my best events are the 100 and 200 butterfly. Summer league swimming was the highlight of my summers as a child, and I hope to help make it the highlight of these kids' summers too. I can't wait for a fun season!
My name is Coach Brooks! This will be my fourth year coaching with the JCC Piranhas, and I am excited to be back to join the family. I started on the JCC Piranhas when I was six, and I swam club at Longhorn Aquatics for seven years, then at Western Hills Athletic Club (WHAC) for my last three years of high school. At WHAC, I am coached by Jimmy Bynum and three-time Olympic gold medalist Ian Crocker. My favorite stroke has always been breaststroke, and my favorite event is the 200 breast. I also love the individual medley. I am about to graduate from Anderson High School, where I swam on the team for four years, and plan to attend Southwestern University in the fall to study music education and swim for the Southwestern Pirates!
